Cinéma Ciné-club - CycleFri 14 June - 6pm @ AF Manchester £2 (members) / £3 This spring the ciné-club will tackle serious matters and tricky questions... with a big laugh! The films screened resort to humour as a way to deal with unemployment, craziness, war or death. Come to see these films that are not really serious but seriously funny! Films in French and with English subtitles, wine and nibbles after the film. 24 May - Special session - premiere of Something in the Air (Après Mai) by Olivier Assayas. There will be no cine-club at the AF Manchester but let's all meet up at the cinema instead! More information here. 14 June - Simon Konianski by Micha Wald Meet the Konianskis: 35 year-old teen Simon who has just broken up with goy dancer ex-wife; Simon's father, Ernest, who has to put up with his son who has temporarily moved back with him; Simon's son Hadrien who is passionate about his grandpa's deportation stories. Not to forget old paranoid Uncle Maurice and gossiper Aunt Mala. When Ernest passes away, the whole family will embark on an eventful journey to Ukraine. Détente Book clubMonday 20 May, 6.15pm - 7.30pm @ AF de Manchester Free of charge By joining the book club, you will have the opportunity to discover the world of French-speaking literature in a relaxed environment with like-minded Francophiles. This year, the book club will be animated by Myassa, our Culture & Communication Assistant. Nedjma by Kate Yacine deals with the story of four young algerian who falls in love with Nedjma, a young franco-algerian. The story takes place in Algeria during the colonial era. Evénement "Anguish and Enthusiasm" - Exhibition and film screenings13 April - 18 August 2013 @ Cornerhouse Anguish and Enthusiasm is an extraordinary group show of new and recent contemporary art investigating post-revolutionary periods and events. Exploring contrasting perspectives and observations from Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia and beyond, the exhibition considers politics, change and those who were lost along the way. Théâtre/Comédie Musicale Piaf by Pam Gems24 May - 15 June @ Octagon Theatre Bolton £9.50 to £23.50 The Octagon Theatre Bolton welcomes Piaf by Pam Gems from 24 May to 15 June. French singer and cultural icon Edith Piaf is celebrated in this powerful musical drama following her rise from the streets of Paris to the international stage. Featuring the iconic torch songs La Vie En Rose and Non, Je ne Regrette Rien performed live on stage, Piaf vividly portrays the life of this charismatic and unforgettable performer. Musique Fête de la Musique / World Music Day21 June @ The Royal Exchange Theatre & The Bay Horse Free of charge This year the AF Manchester will celebrate World Music Day ex muros! World Music Day, or "fête de la musique" in French, is celebrated on 21 June every year since 1982. The public can enjoy free concerts in the streets, cafés and bars all over France. Today, the Day is celebrated in 460 cities throughout 110 countries! Dead Belgian at the Royal Exchange Theatre - 5.30 pm - 7pm Liverpool-based Dead Belgian was formed in 2007 and plays the songs of Jacques Brel. From European folk to progressive rock, stripping the songs to their bare bones and fattening them up again on stage. More information on the event here. O.K. Press and friends at the Bay Horse pub - 9pm - 1am Lyon-based band O.K. Press will hold an exceptional acoustic concert at the Bay Horse. | Danse Tues 11 June - 7pm @ Unity Theatre, Liverpool £10 / £8 Nacera Belaza Company will present as part of the Liverpool Arab Arts Festival two of their acts: Le Trait (Trait) and Le Temps Scellé (Time Sealed In) by Nacera Belaza. This contemporary dance performance has been created by the acclaimed Algerian-French choreographer and dancer Nacera Belaza. Here, Belaza works with her accompanying dancers to create and perform three sensual and intense dance pieces which explore the relationship between Algerian traditional dance, holy rituals and her own contemporary choreography More information on the festival here and more on the company here. | ||

Conférence Innovative Language Teaching and Learning at UniversityFri 28 June - 9am to 5pm @ Manchester Conference Centre £25 (speakers) / £55 (standard) The School of Arts, Languages and Cultures is organising the third annual conference in the Innovative language teaching and learning at university series. Following great success in Newcastle (2011) and Bristol (2012), this years one day event will be focussing on student engagement. This series of conferences has been very successful in bringing together a wide range of colleagues involved in teaching language and university level, including teaching and research focussed academics. We wish to maintain the momentum, continuing to promote the dissemination of good practice; to foster a spirit of community and enquiry within the language teaching body and ultimately enhance the university teaching and learning. Cinema Jour de fête - Jacques TatiSat 29 June - 7.30pm @ The Little Theatre, Altrincham £5 The Manchester and Salford Film Society is a film society created in 1930 with an aim of showing engaging, interesting and challenging films from many periods and countries. Jour de fête by Jacques Tati will be screened on 29 June. The director plays a rural postman who sets out to emulate the technology and speed of the American postal system. Eventually tradition and progress clash, heralding perhaps an early warning on the perils of globalisation. The theatre has excellent bar facilities so the viewers can socialise before and after the film.
