Le Book Club comes back after the holidays with a French classic: Germinal by Emile Zola! Come and discuss with us, give your opinion, share your impressions...

Germinal

Gustave Moreau: Desire and the Ideal in Symbolist Painting
Friday 24 October - 6pm-7pm
@ Alliance Française de Manchester
Free, booking required

Many of Gustave Moreau’s paintings are strikingly – and often hauntingly – strange, in terms of both content and style. This talk (in English) explores the strangeness of Moreau’s art through the persistent conflict between sexual desire and spiritual aspirations, between matter and the ideal.

Moreau’s ideology, inner obsessions and artistic creativity will be explored through a series of major paintings, including Oedipus and the Sphinx (1864), Orpheus (1866), Salome (1876), Jupiter and Sémélé (1895).

Peter Cooke is a Senior Lecturer in French Studies at the University of Manchester and the author of "Gustave Moreau: History Painting, Spirituality and Symbolism" published in 2014 by Yale University Press.

Booking required at 0161 236 7117 / event@afmanchester.org
Complimentary drinks offered after the talk.

Do not miss the ast movie of our cycle "4 Actrices"!

La vie domestique with Emmanuelle Devos
Juliette is a worldly, educated woman looking to move back into the workforce. At the same time, she struggles to find her place amongst the local mothers of her new suburb on the outskirts of Paris. Based on the English novel, ‘Arlington Park’ by Rachel Cusk, the film speaks volumes about the universal class, race and gender divisions still ingrained in the modern middle class world.
